Left-sided local player whose father, also called John, had been a popular Margate winger in the 1970's.
John played his first games for Thanet United's reserves during the 87/88 season, making ten appearances for them, eight as a substitute. He scored once and then became a regular in the reserves during 88/89. John was their leading scorer with ten goals from 26 games and won the team's 'Most Improved Player' award for the campaign. He also made a handful of first team appearances during the season, making his debut as a substitute in a 2-2 draw at Corinthian on 13.9.88. John made two more sub appearances in the weeks that followed but then dropped back into the reserves. He returned to the first team squad for a 5-0 defeat at Sheppey on 1.5.89, coming on as sub, and then made his only start on 6.5.89 in Thanet's last-ever match before the club reverted to the name of Margate. John played on the left wing as United lost 3-0 at Bury and the Thanet Times said that he "impressed with his darting runs down the flank". He finished the season having made five appearances, all bar one as sub, but left the club in the summer of 1989.
John joined Ramsgate for the 89/90 campaign but rarely appeared in the Rams' first team. He also made a few reserve team appearances during 90/91 before dropping back into local amateur football where he played for clubs including Saints.
John worked in a Birchington supermarket during his time with Thanet and he was still living locally in 2007.
