Recently started work on the 1989/90 season and if I get my finger out there
could be an update covering 89/90 to 95/96 somewhere down the line. Or I could
do an about turn and start work on the 1890's. The other alternative is not
doing anything but that's pretty unlikely so bear with me !
Updated a few player profiles with some extra info
today. Found a new club for Ken Jones at the end of his career and some extra
info about Gordon Bines' pre-Thanet career. Bit of info about Peter Gillott
too.
Added a new supporter's questionnaire to the 'Memories'

Hello ML and anybody else who still visits - added four
brand new team photos to the gallery today courtesy of Alan Kay's archive
material once again. The new additions are from 34/35, 36/37 (first one for that
season), 50/51 (reserves) and 52/53. Some good ones there. Also updated one of
the existing 50/51 first team photos, now much improved. Individual pics on a
few 50's players profiles have also been updated.
It's been a while but I've done a bit of an update.
Added basic pages for all the new 06/07 players and updated the stats on the
basic pages of the 06/07 squad who'd played in earlier seasons - Charlie Mitten,
Dean Standen, etc. Also updated all the stats pages to include the 06/07 details
and added a couple of new pages dealing with goalkeepers. Only other thing I can
think of is that Steve Lamb now has a photo on his page.
Added eight pre-WWII team photos to the site today, most
of them courtesy of Ian Kay - son of the late Alan Kay - who kindly lent me some
of Alan's archive material. More pics to add soon from the same source. Also
been busy updating lots of player profiles in the past few weeks, just haven't
mentioned it here. Been going through from A-Z updating the details of anybody
who played for a Football League club and now instead of just Football League
appearances all their first team apps are shown. Got as far as the S surnames I
think.
Updated the profiles for several players who also played
for Whitstable with info kindly provided by their club historian Bernie
Thompson. The players concerned are John Archer, Ron Austin, Ron Sturgess, Peter
Vandepeer, Cyril Simpson, Eric German, Dave McFall and Alan Brown.
Corrected Bobby Miles' profile, removing references to
him playing in Canada and now living in America thanks to Keith Lewis telling me
that was a different Bobby Miles ! Updated the names on the 1980's Thanet United
officials photo that I added to the site a few days ago, thanks go to Ken
Tomlinson for correcting my mistakes on that.
Updated Antonio Gallego's profile with some interesting
information and added a few photos here and there, a couple to some of the late
80's results pages and one or two to the club history page.
Added lots of new info to David MacMillan's profile and
also added new info to the pages for Ricky Sopp and Tony Varadi.
Finally got round to adding quite a few nice photos
relating to Charlie Walker that I've had kicking around for a while. Take a look
in the 'Various Photos' bit of the 'Gallery' and the next to last icon there
takes you to the pics. There's two interesting action pictures included which
I've tried to identify as best I can - ie by guessing. The very last icon in the
'Various Photos' bit leads you to another new batch of photos featuring Thanet
United fans on their travels in the 1980's - recognise anybody ? I'm intending
to add lots more pictures I've got lying around soon.
First update (apart from regular 'where are they now'
ones) for a while - added a nice picture of a 1913 crowd to the gallery. Likely
to be further developments to the site in the near future.
Updated quite a few player profiles, mostly for players
who had a spell at Wimbledon during their careers. They include Glenn Aitken,
Stan Brown, Hughie Cochrane, Barry Cordjohn, John O'Mara, Graham Roope, Peter
Rutley and Norman Golding. Lots of new info added to Chic Brodie's page too and
I updated Eric Worthington's profile a few days ago following news of his
death.
Updated the 'Where are they now ?' page again and
greatly improved Stan Lilburn's player profile thanks to info received from his
nephew Barry.
Added a new page to the 'memories' section - 1930's
supporter Jack Metcalf.
Added two old team photos to the gallery - 19/20 and
20/21 seasons. Takes the total number of team pics on the site to 85 ! Also
added some great photos of Hartsdown Park to the gallery - they're in the
'various' (or is it 'other' ?) bit and in the section near the bottom called
'Hartsdown Park in the 1970's'. Two of the pics are colour shots of the ground
in 1970 and I don't think they've ever seen the light of day before. A few good
ones of the old North stand too. Also updated the 'where are they now' page to
bring it up to date - ie James Corbett to Folkestone, Wesley Hammond to
Faversham, etc. Also changed Phil Amato's profile after finding out by chance
that he never played for Carshalton - that was a different Phil Amato. Bit
unlikely but true. Planning to update a few more bits and pieces over the next
few days and one addition will be a new supporter 'memories' page.
Been busy doing stuff for the Margate programme but I've
just updated nine profiles, all for former West Ham players - picked up a West
Ham 'Who's Who' book that had some useful info. Players concerned are Alan
Blackburn, Albert Foan, Almer Hall, Ken Tucker, Don Wade, Charlie Whitchurch,
Ron Wilson and Jackie Wood. Also updated Brian Gregory and Charlie Walker a
couple of days ago. I've got a new supporters 'memories' page to add to the site
in the next few days too.
Main addition today is a new player featured in the
'Memories' part of the site - prolific 1970's striker Brian Gregory. Also added
Charlie Walker's date of birth and date of death to his page and added photos to
the pages for Alfie Barrett and Clive Haywood.
Added a great 1930's photo (at considerable personal
expense !) - action from an away game at Clapton Orient on 12.12.35. Click on
the camera icon by the match details on the 35/36 season page of the 'Results
Archive' to see it. I think the defender in the picture is Harry Brophy having
looked at the 35/36 team photos on the site but I'm not totally convinced - let
me know if you agree / disagree.
Updated over 40 profiles for players with surnames from
S to Y inclusive, completing the overhaul of existing profiles. As usual I've
marked all the updated ones on the index pages.
Quite a major update today - finally got round to
updating / correcting ALL the pre-WWII result lists. Researched the stuff ages
ago but never got round to replacing the previous versions which were cobbled
together from various sources. So the details of every competitive match ever
played from 1897/98 to 1939/40 are now as per my own research, missing a few
scorers here and there but the details are mostly complete. Added the details of
the home grounds for each season and there's a few photos linked to the result
lists too, oldest ones are from the 1906/07 season.
Improved photos added to the pages for Chris Clarke and
Roger Wedge and Keith Hymas finally gets a picture too.
Added basic pages for all the new 05/06 players and
updated stats on players who appeared during 05/06 but were already on the site
- Charlie Mitten, Bill Edwards etc.
Updated all the stats pages to include 05/06.
Updated players from the O to R inclusive - about 25 in
all. Lots of extra info added to Mike Renshaw and George Proudlock amongst
others.
Quite a big update today - over 50 profiles from G to N
inclusive.
Updated about 15 more profiles - E's and F's apart from
Larry Baxter in the B's. He's now got a photo for the first time. Lots of new
info on the profiles, especially Albert Foan, Jimmy Fletcher and the
Fusco's.
Bit of an update during a dark week in the club's
history - I've changed all the player profile index pages so that they show the
date each player's page was last updated. Thought it might be helpful. At the
moment nearly every player is showing as updated on xx.xx.xx - ie nothing's
changed recently - but I've just altered quite a few profiles for players with
A, B, C and D surnames. Hopefully the new system will point you in the right
direction if you look at the A, B, C and D profile index pages. There's also one
update in the 'G' section. Think the most major update was Jimmy Briscoe's
profile and there's also quite a bit more on Jackie Dryden, Eric (formerly
Gerry) German, Bryan Clifton and others that I can't remember. I've got masses
of profiles to update and will do them in alphabetical batches over the next few
days so keep an eye out.
Added a couple more photos to the 'Various photos' bit
of the gallery including a team photo of a Margate Veterans side from the 1980's
and a nice 1930's crowd photo. The veterans picture has a couple of 'unknowns'
in it who I ought to know but can't put names to at the moment.
Added quite a few photos to various pages. Good one from
Wimbledon v Margate during 75/76 - take a look at the results list and click the
camera icon. Also added a photo of Margate playing at Northdown Corner to the
'Various photos' bit of the gallery and some great photos of Hartsdown in 1976 -
including a rare one of the old North Stand - have been added there too. Another
new photo in the 'Various photos' section is the one 6th down on the left -
training in 1973. The page of Dreamland pictures also has a new addition and the
'Last days of the old Hartsdown' page (on the right) has three new additions
too.
Very minor update - Jackie Dryden now has a photo and I've
added a new picture of Len Dolding to the 'player photos' in the gallery. Also
updated a few players in the 'where are they now' section.
Finally added two nice 70's team photos to the gallery,
courtesy of Steve Miles several months ago. There's a really good 73/74 one in
colour and the other one's from 74/75. Actually added a third 70's photo too - a
very poor one from 76/77 that I thought I might as well put on the site. Could
be more updates in the next week or so.
Possibly coming to the end of a lazy spell, updated a few
bits and pieces today. In the gallery I've been able to put names to most of the
'unknowns' in the 81/82, 82/83 and 83/84 reserve team photos thanks to Gerry
Collis who used to manage Thanet's second string. This also means that the
profiles for Simon Briggs, Brian Phillips and Colin Twyman have photos for the
first time and I've added a bit more info to Gerry's son Adrian's player
profile. I've also added a couple of photos to the 'player pics' bit of the
gallery and the 'Where are they Now' page is as up to date as I can make it.
I've actually been updating that whenever I find out about a player moving but
haven't bothered updating the front page of the site. On a sadder note I've now
updated Laurie Thomson's profile following his death last week - few extra bits
in there. You can also now find out the first names of the Taylor-Jones brothers
if you're so inclined - I've updated the page on the Wye match in the 'famous
games' section.
Added quite a few pictures to the 'Various Photos' section
of the 'Gallery' courtesy of Steve Miles. Lots of photos added to the Spurs game
page in the 'Famous Matches' section too. The 'Where Are They Now' page is still
being regularly updated - latest change is Aaron Barnett at St.Albans.
Added 16 action photos from the 85/86, 86/87, 87/88 and
88/89 seasons to the site. All courtesy of stalwart scribe Neil Wyatt. You can
see them by going to the results pages for the relevant seasons and then
clicking on the camera icon where it appears. Added a few 'various' photos to
the site too, courtesy of Steve Miles - more to come soon.

and added lots more stories to Jimmy Hunt's 'Memories' page too.
Added a new player questionnaire to the 'Memories' section
today - 60's stalwart Jimmy Hunt. Recently added Jeremy Jacobs' memories to the
supporters part of the section too. Been doing lots of little bits and pieces,
quite a few extra photos in the 'Player Photos' bit of the gallery and updated
the pictures on quite a few player profiles including Brian Gregory, Chris Plumb
and Dave Crush. The 'Where are the Now' page is constantly being updated too -
latest addition is Denver Birmingham.
Updated the history page today, added a bit more about
04/05 and revamped the bit about the start of the club, including a few photos.
Also added a new match to the 'Famous Games' bit of the site and I've been
updating the 'Where are they now ?' section every time I've found anything new
out. Still spending a lot of time on the site or work related to it.
Added pages for all the new 04/05 players today and updated
the stats for all our other current players. Also added quite a few new photos
to various profiles including Johnny Ray, Ray Prior, Mickey Griffiths and Alan
Dennis. I've also updated masses of profiles for players who had spells at
Canterbury or Gravesend - adding stats mainly. Tweaked lots of other profiles
and a few have had quite a major overhaul, Norman Fusco and Garry Aldous are a
couple that spring to mind. Meanwhile I've been busy at the library recently,
trying to put together stats for every pre-World War II season. Working back
from 39/40 I've now got as far as 1900, there's lots of missing line-ups, etc at
the moment but hopefully I'll be able to find the relevant info out at some
stage. If I do any new batches of profiles they're much more likely to be very
old ones rather than a continuation of what I've done so far - ie 45/46 to
88/89. I wasn't exactly knocked off my feet by the reaction to the 1980's update
so I've had a bit of a re-think.
Updated around 50 profiles to various degrees. Major
changes to Eric Worthington, Mike Renshaw, Ron Harland, Jimmy Hunt and Stan Earl
amongst others. Added photos to a few profiles that were missing them including
Don Wade and Jimmy Stevenson. Also added dates of birth to numerous players who
also played for Canterbury, courtesy of a Canterbury City book I got hold of.
I'll be adding Canterbury stats to many players as I now have a pretty
comprehensive list of appearances and goals for them. Also updated the
statistics in the 'Records / Stats' section - all appearances and goals up to
the end of 2004/05 are now there and I've added a couple more sections. Still no
future plans for the site other than these kind of mini updates.
Finally the full 1980's update has arrived !! Over 150 80's
profiles either updated or brand new, 11 80's team photos added, two 80's
quizzes, 9 seasons of 80's results, programme photos, lots of 80's action photos
and a couple of 'memories' specials.
Updated 11 more pre-1980's profiles today, full list at
bottom of profile index page. Interesting info on Colin Clewlow, a few new
photos and other bits and pieces.
As at least, or more likely exactly, one person spotted the
updated pre-80's profiles I've just changed another 19 - all surnames starting
with 'B'. Again the full list is at the foot of the profile index page.
Updated seven profiles today, they're listed at the bottom
of the profiles index. Bet nobody notices though !
I'm still plugging away in case anybody wondered. Just
added ten new team photos to the gallery, some really nice 1930's ones and a
couple of early 1970's ones too. I've added the option to click on the photo to
see a bigger / better version but unless you've got broadband you'll probably
struggle. Meanwhile the mythical 80's update is closer than ever, I've now
decided it'll cover 80/81 to 88/89 (ie not 89/90 as the whole team changed then)
and I'm currently putting the finishing touches to my 87/88 research. So only
one more season and the update will finally appear, even with my levels of
laziness it can only be a week or two away now.
Every pre 79/80 profile from L to Y has now been updated
today !
Updated all the old J's and K's today - Billy Jowett is
always worth a read, David Jarman has quite a bit of new info, Ken Jones too.
Much more besides.
The overhaul of the profiles continues - all the relevant
G's and H's updated today.
Suddenly got the urge to update masses of profiles with
extra info I've had kicking around for ages. Also updated lots of others to make
them more readable - inserting paragraphs basically. The bottom line is that
every profile for every player whose Margate career ended before 80/81 will be
updated in the coming days. So far I've done all the A's, B's, C's, D's, E's and
F's. Many of these updated profiles feature significant new info, especially for
anybody who played in Scotland or South Africa - I've managed to get hold of a
lot of stats for both those countries. Examples of this off the top of my head
are John Fraser and John Fahy. Keep an eye on the site over the next week or so,
I should be able to update a few surname groups (ie G, H....) every day.
The most significant player profiles update for ages - go
to the profiles section and scroll down to the bottom (beneath the A-Z photos)
to see the list of updated players. All of them are 'A' and 'B' surnames and
vary from major changes to cosmetic ones - ie from new / corrected info to
improved layout. Phil Amato's page now includes full details of his time in
South Africa and no longer says he managed Carshalton. Quite a few of the
players listed have new / improved photos and a few more recent (80's) players
have had photos added - Wayne Terry, David Healy, Paul Fassam, Andy Pulman, Dale
Walton, Paul Jefcoate, Steve Bunn and Steve Snell.
Thought I'd better do some kind of update, just in case a)
anybody reads this and b) anybody thought this site was on the way out. I've
still been doing lots of site-related work, it's just that it's not stuff that
will appear here just yet. Added a couple more pictures to the Spurs game stuff
('Famous Games') and a few to the 'Player Pictures' bit of the gallery,
including a fairly recent one of Davie Laing. There should be a few more updates
over the next few weeks.
Added around a dozen action photos to the pages for 62/63
to 65/66 inclusive. Also added a few photos to the 'various' bit of the gallery
- couple of old rosettes, a ticket from the Peterborough FA Cup tie and a
picture of a snowy Hartsdown. Still staggering along with 80's research.....
Quite a major addition to the site - the full list of
post-war appearances and goals is now on the site. It's located in the 'Records
/ Stats' section - click the 'Statistics' button when you get there.
Bit of a lull at the moment, as anybody still visiting the
site might have noticed. Work is still going on 'behind the scenes' but nothing
much to show for it on the site itself. I've got around 25 action photos from
the 60's to put on the site and around as many new player photos too but it's a
case of lacking motivation. But I've added five more photos to the feature on
the Spurs game - the page that I've not had a shred of feedback about - and I
now have every line-up from 46/47 to the present day so might add the full
appearances and goals details to the site at some stage. Definitely in one of my
disillusioned / what's the point ? phases at the moment though.
I've finally got round to putting something into the
'Famous Matches' section of the site and there's new photos on the profiles for
Gordon Hopkinson (first time he's had a pic), Bob Harrop and John Shepherd. I've
also added two nice pics to the players section of the gallery - Bob Harrop in
his Manchester United days and Ronnie Waldock during his time at Sheffield
United. The team photos part of the gallery now includes a line-up from 81/82.
Added eleven new programme scans for Dover v Margate games
to the results pages - they cover the 59/60 to 69/70 seasons. Thanks go to Chris
Collings for these. Also added photos to the profiles of John Williams and Glenn
Aitken.
Updated a few player photos on their profiles today -
mostly 50's players. Also added a new picture from the Walsall game in 1955 to
the gallery. Not much happening other than that but research is still ongoing.
Altered the main menu to include new links to this news
page and to the 'On this Day' page in case people miss it when they visit. I've
also been busy researching the post-Margate career of David Pearce and his
profile has been updated. There's a few new names on the 'Credits' page and I've
added a nice photo of a very young Frank Ovard to the 'Player Photos' bit of the
'Gallery'. I'm also trawling through a mass of programmes - league and
non-league - dating from the early 1970's to the present day in the hope of
finding out additional info about past / present Margate and Thanet players. As
for the 1980's research I'm meant to be concentrating on - I'm about halfway
through now but I've been distracted by work, hunting for info in programmes and
a bit of pre-war 'dabbling'. Did you know that one C.J.Kitto once went three
whole seasons (possiby more) without missing a game for Margate ? More gems to
follow...
